Summer Home Maintenance Checklist

By csheaffer@helenadamsrealty.com - June 15, 2020
Summer is on its way to the Queen City and with the change of each season comes a new set of home maintenance tasks to check off the to-do list. Homeowners will soon want to prepare their home and yard for the summer dinner parties, outdoor barbeques, and hot sunshine that awaits. While you prepare for your next home maintenance projects, use this list as a guide.

Summer Pest Control

The warm summertime is always an entryway for seasonal bugs and insects. Summer brings the opportunity for spiders, flies, wasps, ants, and mosquitoes to make their way indoors. If you don’t already have year round maintenance scheduled, set a service appointment with a local pest control company. If you need help choosing vendors, reach out to your preferred Helen Adams Realty agent for a list of local options.

Odds and Ends

One of the easiest things to do at the change of a season is to run through a quick list of small to-do’s around the house. These tasks should be done regularly throughout the year, so a new season is the perfect reminder to do so. Check the smoke and carbon monoxide detectors and replace batteries where needed, dust ceiling fan blades, reverse fan blade direction to counterclockwise, and clean bathroom vents. The fresh sense of safety and circulation will help you feel ready to take on summer. If you haven’t done so yet this year, the break from cooler temperatures makes this the perfect time to get your chimney professionally cleaned.

Stay Cool

It’s time to get your HVAC ready for its busiest season. If you have central air conditioning, schedule an appointment to get your system serviced to ensure optimal performance for the upcoming heat. If you’d rather DIY, simply remove and clean all air filters yourself and clean your fans with a damp rag to remove whatever dust and dirt is leftover from previous seasons. Carolina summers can get intense and the last thing you’ll want is to have your cool indoor haven interrupted.

Exterior and Yard

A favorite place to enjoy the summer is in your own backyard! Spend some time making sure that your front and backyard are ready. Clean your gutters and downspouts to ensure water is draining properly to prepare for on-and-off summer showers. Be sure to focus on yard furniture and appliances like patio tables and chairs and your grill. Power wash your windows, porch, deck, or wherever you will be spending the most time outside. Replace door mats as needed so that things look fresh and new. If you have kids, check outdoor play equipment for safety and functionality so that you aren’t surprised with any problems.

With the upcoming change of seasons, make sure your home and yard are prepared. These tips can help you ensure that your home environment will be clean, updated, and maintained throughout the next few months. From air-conditioner tune ups to power washing your porch, these simple tasks will help keep your home happy and healthy throughout this summer in the Carolinas.
