It’s time to take spring cleaning outside to the garden! No matter if you are a seasoned gardener or just starting your journey, you’ll want to prepare correctly to ensure a successful growing season. Whether it's food, herbs, or gorgeous blooms you’re after, we’ve compiled some spring gardening tips for you.
Research and Planning
Before breaking ground, research what will work best for your area. Charlotte falls into Zone 8a (of the 2023 USDA Hardiness Zone Map), which means it is generally safe to start planting without fear of frost after April 1st. Charlotte experiences hot summers and warmer temperatures into the fall season, meaning that the area benefits from a longer growing season than other parts of the country.
Some other questions to consider as you plan:
- Gardening goals - Do you want to grow vegetables or herbs for consumption, or flowers and/or other greenery for aesthetic purposes?
- How much maintenance are you willing to do?
- What materials do you need? Soil, fertilizer, tools, landscaping fabric, etc.
- How much room do you have for your garden? Assess your space and see what it can accommodate.
Prep for your Space
Consider your garden’s location when deciding which items to grow and when to plant them. Sunlight needed, soil type, and required attention vary for each plant, so you’ll want to choose your plants carefully based on what your yard, patio, or balcony can accommodate. Read seed packets or plant cards carefully to ensure you choose the right location for your growing garden. You may have to scope out your yard for a day or two to see how much sunlight an area gets throughout the day.
Planting Time
Now that you’ve decided what you what and where to plant it’s time to get down to business! Prepare the garden bed or pots, adding the correct soil if needed and removing pesky weeds that may disturb your blooms, seeds, or bulbs. Start planting according to instructions and/or seasonal planting guides, closely following spacing, depth, and light recommendations for each plant.
If you’re planting ready blooms or established plants, consider adding mulch or pine straw around the garden bed to help retain moisture. Establish a watering schedule based on the plant’s needs, monitor for pests that need managing, and wait for the magic to happen.
Maintenance is Key
The key to any garden is maintaining it to facilitate plant growth. This includes watering, weeding, fertilizing, removing pests, trimming, staking, and more! Gardening is a continual learning process, so do your best and take this year’s growth into account. Apply what you learn this season to future growing endeavors.
